EXONERATED. VINDICATED.

Here's What They Don't Tell You About Wrongful Conviction

They'll tell you about the injustice. The courtroom. The appeals. The years stolen.

What they won't tell you is what happens to a man's SOUL when the world locks him away for something he didn't do.

When his sons are 4 and 5 years old.

When his wife becomes a single mother overnight.

When 25 years, his entire twenties, thirties, and forties, disappear behind concrete and steel.

Anthony Sims didn't wait 25 years to start living.

While the system tried to break him, he earned a college degree. While they tried to isolate him, he built brotherhood. While they tried to make him bitter, he became a beacon.

He learned to parent through prison glass. He got divorced and married again. He started a business that landed him in solitary. He became a facilitator teaching gangsters how to cry without shame.

"Life isn't about waiting for the storm to pass. It's about learning how to dance in the rain."

— Vivian Green

That wasn't just a quote to Anthony. It was survival. It was resistance. It was the philosophy that kept him human in a place designed to strip that away.

On March 11, 2026, the New York Court of Appeals unanimously vacated his conviction. He was exonerated.

But the truth?

He'd already been free for years.

WHAT'S INSIDE

This isn't another wrongful conviction story. This is a masterclass in staying human when everything's designed to make you forget how.

The Tale of Two Keisha's

His ex-wife who raised their sons alone for 25 years. His current wife who married him IN prison. They're both still in his life. They're friends. How is that even possible? You just have to read it.

Fatherhood Through Glass

What do you tell your 7-year-old when he threatens to shoot people? How do you teach your sons to be men when you're wearing a green uniform? The most powerful parenting story you've never heard.

When Gangsters Cry

The AVP workshop that changed everything. Hard men with tears streaming down their faces. The moment Anthony realized vulnerability isn't weakness, it's the only way to stay alive.

Dancing in Solitary

He started a business in prison to provide for his family. They put him in solitary for it. What he learned about freedom in a 6x8 cell will change how you see your own prisons.

The Exoneration No One Saw Coming

28 years after conviction. The courtroom scene. The phone call to his sons. The reckoning with a system that stole everything but couldn't break him. This chapter will wreck you.

From Inmate to VP

How a wrongfully convicted man became Vice President of AVP New York, works at the Ford Foundation, and runs his own consulting firm. The blueprint is in here.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Anthony Sims

VICE PRESIDENT, AVP NEW YORK

FACILITIES ASSOCIATE, FORD FOUNDATION

FOUNDER, ANTHONY SIMS LLC

FROM INMATE #99A3700 TO INDUSTRY LEADER

Anthony Sims is a transformative leader in social justice and violence prevention. Today, he serves as Vice President of Alternatives to Violence Project (AVP) New York, works as a Facilities Associate at the Ford Foundation, and runs Anthony Sims LLC, a consulting firm helping formerly incarcerated individuals, organizations, and families navigate transformation and reentry with dignity.

But 28 years ago, he was Inmate #99A3700, a 23-year-old man wrongfully convicted of murder, sentenced to 25 years to life for a crime he didn't commit.

During his incarceration, Anthony earned an Associate's Degree through the prestigious Bard Prison Initiative (graduating in 2013 with his sons watching), became a certified AVP facilitator, and developed a philosophy that would define his life: learning to dance in the rain instead of waiting for the storm to pass.

Released in December 2022 after serving 24 years and 6 months, Anthony was officially exonerated on March 11, 2026 when the New York Court of Appeals unanimously vacated his conviction.

But long before that courtroom vindication, Anthony had already found freedom, through education, purpose, intentional fatherhood, and an unwavering commitment to transformation over bitterness.

What He's Building Now:

AVP Leadership

As VP of AVP New York, Anthony facilitates workshops teaching alternatives to violence, the same program that transformed him. He's now creating safe spaces for thousands of incarcerated and formerly incarcerated individuals.

Ford Foundation Impact

Working at one of the world's most influential philanthropic organizations, Anthony brings lived experience to conversations about justice, equity, and systemic change.

Anthony Sims LLC

Through his non-profit organization, Anthony helps organizations, families, and returning citizens navigate the complex landscape of reentry, transformation, and purposeful living after incarceration.

Anthony is a devoted husband, father to two grown sons (Anthony Jr. and Antoine), and grandfather. He lives his life as proof that transformation is real, that second chances matter, and that the human spirit cannot be caged, even when the body is.

From the Inside Out is his first book. It's not just his story, it's a guide for anyone seeking freedom in impossible circumstances.

What People Are Saying

Early readers and supporters share their thoughts

I read three chapters and immediately joined the waitlist. I NEED the rest of this story. You know that feeling when you're reading something so good you start rationing pages because you don't want it to end? That's how I felt with the preview chapters.

Maurice Dargan

I thought I knew Anthony's story. I was wrong. I've read articles about his exoneration. But nothing—and I mean NOTHING—prepared me for the raw truth in these pages. The chapter about his sons' birthdays? I had to put the book down and cry.

Lashonda Williams

This is the book I've been waiting for without knowing I was waiting for it. Anthony writes the way he speaks. He doesn't paint himself as a hero or a victim. He's just a man who refused to waste 25 years, even though they were stolen from him. You can't fake this kind of wisdom. I'm counting down the days.
